Here's a gift from Los Angeles to you - Part 2 of the recent live set with Dam-Funk and tAz Arnold at the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery. You know Part 1 was excellent on it's own but after hearing this addition, you find that it was just a warm up. In the second half we're hit with rhymes from special guest Krondon and sax and keys from friend Terrace Martin. Special indeed.
Bump this well into the New Year!

With the holidays upon us, we thought it would be the perfect time to drop this first installment of a two part edition of the HVW8 Int'l Podcast. Dam-Funk and tAz Arnold, performing together for the very first time. This was a highly anticipated collaboration that did not disappoint - not that there were any doubts.
The two heavyweights were joined by Thunder Cat, Major, Terrace Martin, Krondon and others on a funk adventure that builds and evolves. The final jam will blow your mind.
There's just no way we could cut this audio down to fit one show!
Take a listen and don't forget that Part 2 is on it's way soon.
Special thanks to the players and the standing room only crowd.

MASTER BLAZTER: BLAZT OFF
BLAZT OFF, a mix by Los Angeles' own DJ Kutmah, showcases the individual styles of Computer Jay, J1, and D-F. Collectively, they are known as Master Blazter. Individually, each is accomplished in his own right, and as a group, there is no stopping the funk they create.
Computer Jay develops hard hitting tracks built upon moog, rhodes and personally tweaked electro systems.
J1 provides the backbone of rhythm on drums, while equally being comfortable producing quality funk laced beats.
D-F adds his signature vocals and provides layers of deep funk with his own keyboards and keytar.
The countdown has begun....
Three musicians with their own distinctive styles have come together to form Master Blazter. Each individual is an integral part of the whole - each one necessary to keep funk music alive, taking it to unforeseen heights.

When our buddies TK Disko and Even Ian from the Hot Biscuit party here in LA asked us to join them for a day-to-evening event during the Sunset Junction Street Fair, we jumped at the chance. These guys specialize in club foundation tracks and deep disco, so we knew this would not be something to pass up - and we were right!
An outside patio, booming system and homies from all over made the day complete. The dudes throw down.
Listen and enjoy as Ty G and Max join Even Ian, TK Disko and special guest Conor trade short sets. It's hard to tell where one end and the other begins.

Along with Daz on the scene is Black Shakespeare. You may know him from his sublime remake of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams a couple of years back. Quite possibly, you've also heard the sounds booming from his converted ice cream truck at an outdoor event. If not, the experience is not to be missed!

Everyone in attendance anxiously held their breath as three friends set up a a room full of drums, keyboards, synths, modules, computers and more. The stage was set for something big. When it was time Dam Funk, Computer Jay and J1 took their places.
What came next is what you'll hear on this podcast - pure, live future funk inspiration. Dam, Jay and J got DOWN, just vibin' off of each other and the friends in the party. As you'll hear Dam Funk say in the session, "jazz funk, with more funk than jazz"!
Here's a run down of what the boys were using to perform:
Computer Jay -
Fender Rhodes- mark X (Customized.. One of a kind)
Moog Opus

Roland Juno synthesizer
Sequential Circuits Drum machine
and his voice...
J1 -
His basic drum kit, but oh so nice.

This week, the BBQ takes a field trip over to Echo Park in Los Angeles for the Beat Swap Meet. This is a record show/sale held a few times a year here and it's like no other in town. It's a virtual who's who of the local DJ scene - all buying, selling and DJing!
We had a great day at our table, running into tons of friends and making many new ones. It was all about original vinyl so that's what your going to hear at this BBQ Session. We plugged in and just recorded a few of the many, many DJs that came through during the day.
DJs Counterstryke and Expo make up most of the set but there were so many throughout the day, and the music was so good, that everyone was worthy of the spotlight. Regardless of that, we hope that inspires you to dig out your old tracks and maybe go out to dig for some new ones. The Beat Swap Meet and Live at the BBQ will give you another chance real soon!

My oh my!!! The BBQ is back in full effect and it's LIVE!!!
Our friend Noelle Scaggs and DJ Rhettmatic were here n Sunday to get down with one of the most amazing events we've ever had at the HVW8 Gallery!!
Rhettmatic starts us off with a nice little mix as only he can and then launches Noelle straight into what she knows best - soul, soul and more soul. Most of the tracks here are exclusive, advance material that may, or may not be included in future Noelle projects. You'll hear Rhettmatic on the mix throughout.
Who knows? This may be the only spot you ever hear the versions included here... Thanks Noelle - you rocked the BBQ!!!
Chords
Pressure (produced by Evidence)
Love and War
Let Go
U and I (accapella)
Chaos (produced by Rhettmatic)
Think
Dialed Up
Evil Vibrations
Unfortunately, we have no track list for Rhett's mix but we know he'll be back soon to do his own solo guest spot on Live at the BBQ.... Looking forward to that too!
Thanks to everyone who made it out on Sunday and thanks to you for the support!!

On a recent trip out to LA from NYC, our friend Prince Language was snared by the HVW8 kidnap sneak-attack. He was loungin' at one of the local theme parks and we came with the bum rush. I threw the potato sack over his head ad Ty brought the van around back. From there it was straight to the studio... Luckily, he's a good sport and we got him to drop a little set on us. For some reason he had some records with him - we got lucky on that one!
He always comes with amazing tracks that we can pretty much guarantee you'll not find on other mixes out there! I think you'll agree the stealth mission was quite worth it. You're welcome... Don't turn us in.
Here now for you, doing it as only he can:

Dãm-Funk!!!
This week's set is from a man that's almost single-handedly brought the Boogie scene to life here in LA. Dude's got the modern soul thing on lock down! You may know him from his mix of Baron Zen's "Burn Rubber" out now on Stones Throw. It's become an instant classic! You'll find that one in the mix along with some other original material - exclusive to this show!
The sounds are fresh all the way around and the cat is one of the nicest to ever come through the BBQ. Let's get into this!
All joints spun were from the 'original wax' pressings.

Here's a message from the man himself, dãm-funk:
This set I dropped was based in the Boogie, Funk & Modern-Funk music genre's respecfully. This style was first broken and played in a continuous basis (all nite with no filler) @ Funkmosphere (L.A.). This early to mid 80's sound has been respected in the UK & Europe for years, while virtually being ignored here in the states...unfortunately (headz prefering 4 on the floor house sounds, and hip-hop only). After years of myself & others being into this sound and diggin' for this wax, L.A. is now @ the forefront (here in the U.S.) of this emerging scene of Funk & Boogie soundz. Let's keep diggin' ya'll!!
Amen.
It was our honor to be apart of YOUR creative vision dãm-funk! 1!

We caught JT while he was in town last weekend, just before his sets at the King King and DoOver here in LA.
Of course, JT is well known worldwide for his house sets and production skills. Luckily, we know him as a friend and as someone with a deep love for the foundations of dance music. His crates are equally deep and there's way more to his sets than just the straight ahead house bangers...
We got him to throw down this set of some of his personal favorites, classic material and cuts he feels we all need to know about. No four on the floor here - this turned out to be the perfect end of summer soundtrack!
Here you go!
MANDRE - SOLAR FLIGHT
CODEK- TIM TOUM
XXXXX - MAGIC SAYS
EIGHTIES LADIES - TURNED ONTO YOU
JOE THOMAS - FLAME
TAANA GARDNER - WHEN YOU TOUCH ME
NIGHTLIFE UNLIMITED - PEACHES & PRUNES
STEVE PARKS - MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
MANDRILL - IT'S SO EASY LOVING YOU
RARE SILK - RED CLAY
MORNING. NOON & NIGHT - MOVIN' ON DOWN THE LINE

BOOKER T - FLAMINGO
Thanks JT - You're always welcome at the BBQ!
You too are always welcome at the BBQ. If you haven't checked all the shows, take a look back. We've got some incredible material in the archive. It's all available - free! No strings attached!
There's way more to us than just the BBQ sets too. Check these links for art, design, licensing, other radio, blogs, shoes, gear, on and on and on...

Just in case y'all were worried though, the the full crew will be back in effect this upcoming weekend. Looks like we may have yet another friend come through with a mix. In case you've forgotten, past friends have included Daz-I-Kue, The Twilite Tone, Alfred Hawkins and Parra.

The friends from the BBQ are starting to get deep! This week, live and direct from St. Louis is our main man Black Spade, aka Stoney Rock!!
He blessed us with some exclusive beats, laced up some recent picks as well as some classics. Our boy manned the mic all day and had some fun.
Luckily, I hit record just in time to make an hour of history...
Live at the BBQ with Black Spade, HVW8 and Solid State LA.

Good people support good people and good music just speaks for itself!
This week, The Twlite Tone comes through the BBQ to prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt. All we can say is that, beyond the supreme music selection and mixing ability, he's just one cool ass guy. We just had to give him the full slot... let the man play!
And so we bring you our friend from Chicago - The Twilite Tone.
Can't really say what all of the tracks are but you will hear everything from the XXX, X-XXX, Spacek and Dilla to Linda Clifford and XXXXXXXXX. There's a ton more jazz, funk and soul thrown in for good measure - all done with that super smooth style.
Thanks Tone!!
Max and Ty are back next week for more BBQ madness direct from the HVW8 Gallery in Los Angeles. Recorded live on Sunday afternoons.

It's hard to believe that everyone made it through the last week!
Thursday's art show at the Standard in DT LA was nuts with 2000+ coming out for a little room full of Parra's art. That's right - 2000+ for a 3 hour art gallery. Good things are happening to our boy P. Saturday took us all to another exhibit for our friend over at the HVW8 space - Max and Willow played some recs, crazy Tecates were had and things generally got nuts. Again, good things happening w/ Parra as he sold a lot of work. Make it to Spaulding and Melrose in LA to cop the remaining pieces - no sky high prices niether!
That brings us to Sunday's recurring decompression session @ the very same HVW8 gallery. Max and TY chillin out w/ some records, friends, bbq and beers. Press record and get it out to the world!!!!
(The pics included in the enhanced podcast chronicle the week's events)
